The Real Avatar - Join The Na’vi And Help Save The Planet.

On the 25th June I will be attempting to do 1000 push-ups in 2 hours to save 10 acres of endangered rainforest in conjunction with The World Land Trust. I am short of my target at the moment and really hope you will help in any way you can.

You can sponsor me here.

Alternatively you can text TREE96£(and the amount) to 70070.

Without the rainforests of this world our survival as a species is bleak. The World Land Trust of whom David Attenborough is the patron, buys and protects rainforests which are most at risk from exploitation and has saved over 500,000 acres in the 25 years they have existed. Help me raise £1000 and help save 10 acres of rainforest with the World Land Trust.

This is a subject very important to us here at Movie Geeks Film News and we thank you in advance for your support.

Thank you, Steve

Natalie Portman In Episode VII?

Ok, file this under massive speculation, and I mean massive. Fashion N Style (See, I said massive speculation) is reporting that Natalie Portman is excited for the new film, is a fan of J.J.’s and would love to reprise her role of Padme.

Now this is just a bit of fun speculation but could this be a possibility?

Miss Portman is without a doubt one of the finest actors of her generation. Her turn as Padme was fantastic. I’ll point to the scene where she confronts Anakin in the “you’re going down a path I cannot follow…” moment; this scene gives me chills where many other elements of the movie leave me cold. I’d welcome her back. But how..?

I think I’m right in saying that Padme’s character in the EU, long before the prequels, so before she even had a name, was a White Witch and had some kind of connection to the force, so she could potentially become one with the force and appear as a ghost, perhaps exclusively to Leia. That would be interesting.

UPDATE: The more I think about this possibility the more sense it makes. In Jedi Leia says she can remember her mother, images and feelings. We now know that this isn’t possible post prequels, unless Padme was appearing to Leia in a “living force” type visitation. Leia could hone this skill and we’d have her exchanging dialogue with a young Padme.

The report suggests a hologram (although the misspelled in as holocaust, most unfortunate!). This is admittedly more likely. Surely there are hours of recordings of Padme due to her nature as a public figure. Leia could be studying her political prowess, this would give Miss Portman an in. In the Hologram camp; we could also see Padme in a holocron. Perhaps discussing her concerns about Anakin. It would be nice to see a fresh perspective and not just retread the events if the prequels. Reframe Padme’s view of Anakin and provide a new texture to their relationship.

In short we have a wealth of personalities keen to reprise their roles in the films, Sam Jackson, Miss Portman, Ewan McGregor and Billy Dee Williams have all spoken publicly about their interests. There are ways to include everyone, and once you start considering the possibilities new narrative ideas emerge that are very exciting. Let’s hope we hear something solid soon.

Topher Grace’s ReEdit Of the Star Wars Movies

You must have heard about Topher Grace’s cut of the Star Wars movies? He basically dumped the the whole lot into Avid and whittled them down to 85mins. Unfortunately the reedit has been praised and celebrated by all the right people so you be sure that we will a. always want to see the cut and b. never will get the chance. You can however watch the trailer here hosted at Topher’s new website, Cereal Prize.

I really like the trailer. I like the pacing, I’m sure that is a reflection of the pacing of the film itself, seeing as how it’s 85mins it’s sure to be brisk. If i had to pick nits it would purely be the choice to have the blue text float pan across the screen. I’d rather have seen that locked off, also the monochromatic scenes, I’d rather have seen the aesthetic of the movies reflected here. But, having said that Mr. Grace was making his own thing here, not building something to be a part of the Star Wars body of work. Like I say, microscopic nits to pick. Over all I’m really impressed by it, I dare say I’m seriously keen to see the film.

Knowing that Mr. Grace’s cut will never be played before an audience again I reached out to him on twitter with this suggestion:

If you’d like to hear Topher Grace, Kyle Newman and the guys from Rebel Force Radio record an audio commentary for Mr. Grace’s cut of Star Wars then retweet our tweet and add the hashtag #TopherCommentary don’t forget to include @RebelForceRadio and @TopherGrace in your tweets! Let’s hear what we can’t see!

Casting News?

There are a lot of sites reporting the “news” that Girls star Adam Driver had been cast as the chief antagonist in Episode VII. Reports suggest he is to play a Sith Lord, one report saying his character is akin to the role of Darth Vader in the original trilogy.

One outlet claimed the news as official and that Variety had announced it as a done deal, it then went on to suggest that contacts were yet to be signed. Not so official then! Nothing is official until it comes from LucasFilm, but something tells me that’s about to happen.

So let’s assume that there is some truth to the rumour. The description of the role could hold more detail than we might initially think. A role similar to Darth Vader, could mean just a Sith Lord. But could it also mean a former hero that falls to the dark side? That’s essentially Vader’s deal, maybe Mr. Drivers role will be either Luke or Leia’s offspring. Perhaps he falls to the dark side whilst training, perhaps with Luke.

"You refer to the prophesy of the one who would bring balance to the force. And you think it’s this boy?" Remember that line? The concept of balance and the restoration of balance could be a central theme in the sequels. When one considers balance it implies two items of equal measure maintaining an equilibrium of sorts. When the Sith fell, couldn’t that be considered imbalance? The galaxy is now Jedi heavy and the Rise Of The Sith may be required to establish "balance" once more. Perhaps the prophesied "one who will bring balance" isn’t one at all but a “one” that is always in motion. Luke may have qualified as the one, as would Vader, even Palpatine. Now this character could be the “one” who establishes the balance be reintroducing the Sith. Maybe with guidance from beyond. Maybe a shimmering blue ghost Emperor?

Expect official casting announcements from Disney and LucasFilm very soon.
